NBN Co Set to Increase Wholesale Prices Next Month

Internet users across Australia are facing an imminent rise in their National Broadband Network (NBN) plan costs. NBN Co has confirmed that wholesale prices will increase across its entire plan lineup starting July 1, marking the beginning of the new financial year. This change is expected to translate into higher monthly bills for many consumers.

Several internet service providers (ISPs) have already begun communicating these upcoming price adjustments to their customers. Superloop has announced that most of its plans will see a monthly increase of up to AU$6, with exceptions for its NBN 100, NBN 500, and NBN 750 options. Similarly, Aussie Broadband will be implementing price hikes of up to AU$4 per month on select plans.

For consumers, this means a strong likelihood of seeing an increase in their NBN bill with their first billing cycle after July. The most effective strategy to circumvent these immediate price hikes, at least for the next six months, is to switch to a new provider that is currently offering introductory discounts.

Capitalize on EOFY Deals Before They Disappear

June presents a prime opportunity for consumers looking to secure a more affordable NBN plan. The end-of-financial-year (EOFY) sales are currently offering significant deals from a variety of ISPs. These promotions include total discounts reaching up to AU$240 and some offering extended savings for a full 12 months. However, potential customers must act quickly, as many of these attractive deals are set to expire at the end of the month.

Featured NBN Plan Recommendations

For those seeking direction in the current market, several plans stand out:

Kogan Internet Gold Plus | NBN 500 / 500Mbps TES

Priced at AU$69.90 per month for the first 12 months (then AU$85.90 per month), this Kogan Internet plan offers a substantial 12-month discount, a rarity in the current market. This allows users to effectively avoid the upcoming price increase for an entire year while locking in a competitive rate for a high-speed connection.

  • Minimum cost: AU$69.90
  • First year cost: AU$838.80
  • Ongoing yearly cost: AU$1,030.80

Superloop | NBN 1000 / 860Mbps TES

This Superloop plan, currently AU$79 per month for the first six months (then AU$109 per month), will see its standard cost rise to AU$114 per month from July 1. The introductory rate offers immediate savings, and the provider’s PriceLock feature can further secure the AU$109 per month fee for a total of 24 months, providing long-term cost certainty.

  • Minimum cost: AU$79
  • First year cost: AU$1,128
  • Ongoing yearly cost: AU$1,308

Origin Energy Enthusiast | NBN 500 / 500Mbps TES

Origin Energy is currently offering a compelling 50% discount on its plan fees for the initial six months. For the NBN 500 tier, this reduces the price to AU$56 per month, making it one of the most affordable options for this speed tier. However, it is important to note that the ongoing cost is among the higher rates, suggesting a potential need to switch providers after the promotional period concludes.

  • Minimum cost: AU$56
  • First year cost: AU$1,008
  • Ongoing yearly cost: AU$1,344

Spintel | NBN 25 / 25Mbps

For users who do not require high-speed internet, this Spintel NBN 25 plan is an excellent budget-friendly choice, priced at AU$39 per month for the first six months (then AU$64.95 per month). This offer is scheduled to end on June 30, with any subsequent price adjustments yet to be confirmed.

  • Minimum cost: AU$39
  • First year cost: AU$623.70
  • Ongoing yearly cost: AU$779.40

Exetel NBN Plan

This Exetel plan stands out not for promotional discounts, but for its consistently competitive pricing, especially beyond the first year. While not the absolute cheapest initially, it remains the only plan priced under AU$1,000 annually from the second year onwards. Recent speed test data indicates consistent performance exceeding advertised speeds during typical evening hours. An upgrade to NBN 1000 (860Mbps typical evening download speed) is also available for an additional AU$1 per day.

  • Minimum cost: AU$80
  • First year cost: AU$960
