Tuchel Rejects England Pressure Talk After Japan Loss

England’s national team endured a lackluster defeat to Japan, marked by a first-half goal from Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma. This loss, only the second under Thomas Tuchel and the first ever against an Asian opponent, followed a 1-1 draw with Uruguay four days earlier at the same venue. Without captain Harry Kane—rested for the first match and injured for the second—England struggled offensively in both games.

Addressing Pressure Concerns

Ahead of critical summer squad selections for the World Cup, Tuchel dismisses suggestions that pressure overwhelmed players during these auditions. “No, I don’t think so,” he stated. “I don’t want to engage in this discussion, because it’s very clear what we want to do and how we want to play, focusing more on the principles and execution rather than overthinking implications.”

He acknowledges the inherent challenges: “It comes with pressure and noise playing for England. That’s just how it is. We need to observe how players adapt, and we can only do that by testing them.”

Squad and Tactical Reflections

Tuchel emphasizes learning from these matches. “We tried it and must learn from it. Players face heavy schedules over the next two months, preparing us fully,” he noted. On the 26-man World Cup squad, he remains undecided: “I don’t know. I need time to reflect before decisions.”

Regarding full-backs, he expresses confidence: “We have plenty of options and will field strong players there.”

Analyzing the Japan Defeat

The German manager admits the home loss stings. “For sure, it hurts. Losing at home always does,” Tuchel said. “We got punished on a single first-half counter-attack despite facing a tough, well-drilled opponent with several players unavailable and a new formation.”

Describing the tactics, he clarifies: “It featured a false nine on one side; on the other, a traditional striker. These games remain essential. We must contextualize it—not the end of the world.”

Tuchel stresses performance fundamentals: “It’s about execution, winning duels, bravery—not formations. We faced a disciplined side with new players and setup, but we can improve.”
