The Mandalorian & Grogu Digital Release Set for July, Not Disney+

The highly anticipated Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is set to become available for home viewing in late July, but it will not be arriving on the Disney+ streaming service initially. Lucasfilm and Disney announced on July 15 that the movie will be accessible for rent or purchase across various premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms starting Tuesday, July 21.

Digital Release Details for The Mandalorian & Grogu

Fans who missed the theatrical run or wish to revisit the latest installment of the Star Wars saga from home will have the opportunity to do so within days. The film is expected to be available on popular digital storefronts such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango. While specific pricing and rental/purchase options are still being finalized, it is highly probable that both temporary rental and permanent digital purchase options will be offered, aligning with industry standards for major film releases.

Why Not Disney+ Yet?

The decision to bypass an immediate Disney+ release and opt for a PVOD launch has sparked discussion among fans. The film, which marks the first theatrical Star Wars movie in over six years, had its cinema debut more than two months ago. Many might expect a direct-to-streaming release on Disney+, given its status as the primary platform for Star Wars content.

However, this staggered release strategy is a common and financially prudent move for studios. By launching on PVOD platforms first, Lucasfilm and Disney can capitalize on direct consumer revenue through rentals and purchases. This approach can often yield greater immediate returns than relying solely on new Disney+ subscriptions, especially if the digital rental or purchase price exceeds the cost of a monthly subscription to the streaming service.

For example, if a user in the US pays $18.99 per month for an ad-free Disney+ experience, a digital purchase or rental of The Mandalorian & Grogu priced at $20 or more would generate more revenue for Disney through that single transaction than a month’s subscription. This strategy aims to maximize profitability from the film’s release before it eventually transitions to a subscription streaming model.

Future Disney+ Availability

Despite the initial PVOD release, The Mandalorian & Grogu is indeed slated to arrive on Disney+ eventually. The exact date for its streaming debut has not yet been announced, and fans eager to watch it on the platform will need to exercise patience. The typical window between a PVOD release and a streaming service debut can vary, but it is generally expected that the film will become part of the Disney+ library in the coming months.

A New Chapter for Star Wars Cinema

Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian & Grogu continues the narrative established in the popular Disney+ series of the same name. The film’s theatrical release was a significant event, signaling a potential new direction for Star Wars on the big screen. While its initial critical and commercial reception was mixed, its availability on digital platforms offers a new opportunity for audiences to engage with the story.

The decision to bring characters from a successful streaming series into a theatrical film is a notable strategy for Lucasfilm. It allows for a different scale of storytelling and production value, potentially attracting a broader audience beyond the existing fanbase of the show. The success of this model could influence future cinematic endeavors within the Star Wars universe.

Looking Ahead

As fans anticipate the digital release, the eventual arrival on Disney+ will likely be a significant event for subscribers. The film’s journey from theatrical release to PVOD and finally to streaming highlights the evolving distribution models in the entertainment industry. For now, the focus remains on the July 21 digital launch, offering a convenient way for viewers to experience The Mandalorian & Grogu.
