President Trump expresses strong dissatisfaction with Iran’s latest undisclosed peace proposal, delivered through Pakistani intermediaries to resolve the two-month conflict. Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn, he stated he doubts a deal will materialize, noting, “They all want to make a deal but they’re all messed up.”
Trump Highlights Gaps in Negotiations
Trump emphasized that Iran seeks an agreement but faces significant hurdles. “Iran wants to make a deal because they have no military left,” he said. He criticized the proposal’s terms as unacceptable, explaining that Tehran demands concessions he cannot accept. The president also pointed to internal discord among Iranian leaders, describing their leadership as “very disjointed” with “two to three groups, maybe four.”
Later, Trump acknowledged some progress, saying Iran has “made strides” in talks, though he remains skeptical about reaching an agreement.
Stalemate Over Strait of Hormuz and Nuclear Program
The proposal aims to end the deadlock and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which handles one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments. Details remain confidential, but positions are clear. U.S. officials demand Iran suspend its nuclear program and surrender enriched uranium for any peace deal. In response, Iran insists on lifting economic sanctions and retaining control of the strait.
Iran previously floated reopening the strait without addressing nuclear issues. Tehran has disrupted shipping using speedboats to attack and seize oil tankers, along with deploying sea mines. Trump counters with a naval blockade on Iranian ports to compel negotiations.
